The Magicians’ Apprentice™

Corporate Team Building That Reveals the Power of Every Role

What happens when your team has to create a show — from the magic to the music, the lighting to the performance — and everyone has a role to play?

They discover something powerful:

A great performance doesn’t depend on one person. It depends on everyone.

The Magicians’ Apprentice™ is an immersive corporate team-building experience created by Russell Fox that challenges teams to collaborate, communicate, create and perform together.

In a race against the clock, teams are given a magic effect to learn and transform into a three-minute live performance. They must decide what they will create, assign roles, solve problems, manage time and bring everything together on stage.

Because whether you’re the person making the tea, keeping the workplace running, managing a department or leading the company…

Your role matters.

What Is The Magicians’ Apprentice™?

A Corporate Team-Building Challenge Where Everyone Has a Part to Play

The Magicians’ Apprentice™ takes team building out of the conference room and puts your people into a completely different environment: the world of live performance.

Teams are challenged to create their own three-minute mini-show using a combination of:

  • Magic
  • Theatre
  • Comedy or theatrical performance
  • Music and sound
  • Lighting
  • Stage management
  • Presentation
  • Movement and dance
  • Creative direction

Each team receives a magic effect together with a video tutorial. Their challenge is to learn the effect and then build it into an original performance.

But learning the magic is only the beginning.

They must decide what their show will be, who will do what, how it will work, and how they will make it happen.

Participants can take on roles such as:

Magician. MC. Dancer. Stage Manager. Sound Engineer. Lighting Technician. Creative Director. Performer.

Some people will want to be centre stage.

Others will discover that their greatest contribution happens behind the scenes.

And that is exactly the point.

Who Is This Corporate Team-Building Experience For?

For Teams That Need to Work Better Together

The Magicians’ Apprentice™ is designed for organisations that understand that strong businesses are built by strong teams.

It can be adapted for:

  • Corporate teams
  • Executive and leadership teams
  • Management teams
  • Departments
  • Cross-functional teams
  • Sales teams
  • Marketing teams
  • Project teams
  • New or newly integrated teams
  • Organisations undergoing change
  • Conferences and corporate events
  • Employee engagement programmes
  • International corporate team-building events

Whether your organisation is based in South Africa, elsewhere in Africa, the USA, Canada, Australia, the Philippines or across Asia-Pacific, the experience can be adapted to your audience, objectives, venue and event format.

It is particularly powerful when people from different departments, levels or areas of responsibility need to step outside their normal working relationships and experience what it means to depend on one another.

What Does Your Team Get From The Experience?

More Than a Magic Trick. They Experience Team Dynamics in Action.

Your team doesn’t simply attend a team-building activity.

They have to build something together.

They receive:

A Magic Effect to Master

Each team receives a magic effect and video tutorial, giving them a tangible challenge to learn, understand and ultimately perform.

A Creative Challenge

They must decide whether their performance will be comedy or theatrical, then develop the concept and turn it into a three-minute show.

Real-World Team Roles

Everyone has a potential contribution — from the person on stage to the person controlling sound, managing the performance or making sure everything happens at the right moment.

Russell Fox’s Guidance

Russell is available throughout the creative process to provide insights, answer questions, offer guidance and help teams overcome challenges without simply doing the work for them.

A Race Against the Clock

Teams work within a defined timeframe, forcing them to communicate, prioritise, delegate, make decisions and execute.

A Live Performance

Each team ultimately takes its creation onto the stage and performs in front of the other teams.

Reflection and Team Insights

After the performances, the experience moves from entertainment to insight.

A facilitated Q&A allows participants to unpack what happened, what they discovered about themselves and their teammates, and what those lessons reveal about how they work together in the workplace.

Why does your business and team need this experience?

Because Your Business Is Only as Strong as the Team Behind It

Every organisation has visible roles and invisible roles.

The person presenting to the client.

The person managing the project.

The person answering the phone.

The person keeping the office running.

The person making the tea.

The person managing the finances.

The manager.

The director.

The CEO.

Different responsibilities. Different levels of authority.

But every role contributes to the performance of the organisation.

The Magicians’ Apprentice™ creates a powerful environment where this becomes impossible to ignore.

A performer cannot perform effectively without the stage manager.

The stage manager cannot succeed without communication.

The lighting technician needs to know when the performance changes.

The sound engineer needs to understand the timing.

The magician needs everyone around them to do their part.

Remove one important element — and the performance can change completely.

The same principle exists inside every business.

What Workplace Problems Can The Magicians’ Apprentice™ Address?

Turning Team Challenges Into Experiences Your People Can Actually See

Many organisations don’t have a knowledge problem.

They have a people, communication and collaboration problem.

The Magicians’ Apprentice™ gives teams an opportunity to experience these challenges rather than simply talk about them.

It can help expose and address:

Communication Gaps

Teams must communicate clearly when there is limited time and a shared outcome.

Departmental Silos

People experience what it is like to depend on colleagues with completely different responsibilities.

Lack of Appreciation

Participants discover that roles that may appear small can have a significant impact on the final result.

Poor Collaboration

A successful performance requires people to work towards one outcome rather than individual agendas.

Decision-Making Under Pressure

Teams have to make decisions quickly rather than waiting for perfect conditions.

Lack of Ownership

Every participant has an opportunity to take responsibility for part of the outcome.

Fear of Creativity and Failure

The experience creates a safe environment in which people can experiment, try something different and disco

How Will It Impact Your Team and Business?

From Individual Contributors to One Connected Team

The objective isn’t to turn your employees into magicians.

It’s to change the way they see the people they work with.

Participants can leave the experience with a greater understanding of:

  • The importance of every role
  • The value of collaboration
  • The consequences of poor communication
  • The power of shared responsibility
  • The importance of listening
  • The value of different perspectives
  • The relationship between leadership and support
  • The importance of trust
  • The impact of time and decision-making
  • The difference between individual talent and collective performance

And perhaps most importantly:

They experience what becomes possible when everyone contributes to the same outcome.

That is a lesson they can take back into the workplace.

Why Is The Magicians’ Apprentice™ So Impactful?

Because Your Team Doesn't Just Hear the Lesson. They Live It.

Traditional team-building can tell people that communication matters.

The Magicians’ Apprentice™ puts them in a situation where communication actually matters.

It can tell people that every role is important.

Instead, they experience what happens when one part of the performance depends on another.

It can talk about creativity.

Instead, they have to create something.

It can talk about leadership.

Instead, they have to lead.

It can talk about collaboration.

Instead, they have to collaborate.

The lesson is built into the experience itself.

And then the Q&A allows the team to connect what happened during the challenge to what happens every day inside the organisation.

That’s where the real transformation begins.

Why is this a game-changer for your business and teams?

Change the Way Your People See Their Roles — and Each Other

The most powerful team-building experiences don’t end when the activity ends.

They leave people with a new perspective.

The Magicians’ Apprentice™ creates a shared experience that teams can remember, talk about and refer back to long after the event is over.

Because somewhere between learning the magic, arguing over the performance, solving the problems, racing the clock and finally stepping onto the stage, something happens:

People stop being job titles.

They become collaborators.

They see the person behind the role.

They discover strengths they may never have seen before.

And they experience, firsthand, that extraordinary results rarely come from one extraordinary individual.

They come from ordinary people doing extraordinary things together.

Reviews

I recently had the pleasure of seeing Russell Fox at a work conference. Russell absolutely lives up to his "magician insane" title!! he was both charismatic and truly inspiring. Once we were convinced that WE TOO can do the broken glass walk that he is famously known for, the entire company accepted the challenge and did the walk. His show gave us more motivation to drive our business forward to new heights than any other speaker Ive come across I would highly recommend Russell to and company or private person that is interested in building confidence and shifting mindsets in their staff members.
After having a serious heart attack, triple by pass open heart surgery, life was a slow careful journey. Everything slowed down and one tends to stop living - too scared to do something, the "what if my heart" thoughts hanging around. After attending a conference where Russel spoke and months of life coaching, everything changed for the better. I see life in a far more positive way. Correct to living. Correct diet (which is still work in progress). Correct positive mind set. I am not great at writing reviews, but what I can say is, having crossed paths with a life saver such as Russell, has meant the world to me.
